So, I just looked up the summary and I'm a master buller
Like, it is I get it from my father
It is my best trait

So Hannah gets you this book and it's called The Lost King

Like you have to read it." Like gave it to me and I was like, "Okay." Like I'm done
Like the cover was kind of scary looking
So I was like, "Sure, why not?" And we go to Jojo's house

I was like, why would anybody [laughter] want to read this? It was subjecting myself to torture and I just felt like, why is one bad thing, Have you read it? >> But I've heard, by the way, don't similar

It's honestly an exhausting read
And I got like halfway through and already so many disastrous things had happened and I was like, "This can't get worse." [snorts] And then you keep reading and it just gets worse
And I just was like, "This is the longest book ever >> for there to be no silver lining whatsoever." >> Yeah. >> And I eventually did go back to it because I I needed a book and it was the only book in the vicinity >> and I finished it and I think honestly stepping away from it, I was able to then go back into it with a less like dismal >> Yeah
I want to go into a topic of conversation that I feel like you Phoenix will really understand
I want to talk about do you think book talk is dead? Because for the viewers to understand Phoenix does not watch book talk

I felt like, oh, I must have this same reaction or the same experience
And ultimately, I would like order the book, start reading it, and then I would be so consumed with all of the opinions I had circulating >> that I wouldn't be able to actually have a singular experience reading the book. >> I feel like that's how I feel with Acatar
It's like everyone told me I was going to love it so much because I love like fourth ring and romantic, but then it's like the whole book I was just thinking like I should love this, I should love this, I should love this, and like I didn't love it that much. >> I I agree
Like I read Acatar and I I like the storyline, but there were so many times, >> no hate to the author, by the way
You still you still ate that
You know what I mean? But there were still so many times where I was reading it and I was so confused and I had to reread it like six times
And even after the sixth time, I still >> couldn't really paint the picture >> as well as I wanted to. >> But then it's like the whole book is world building
So I'm like, how can I not see a crystal clear picture? >> Oh yeah
Yeah, >> by the way, got 60% through the second book and like it's still I still like out of comfort go back and read it, >> but like I just wish it was a little bit more descriptive and like easier to like digest. >> I agree. >> I also feel like when you're seeing all these people like read these books online and then you start to read them and you don't like it, it's almost like, okay, then I shouldn't read because all these people love to read and they're loving these books and I don't feel this same connection with it
So maybe reading is just not for me
But I think you might not like the books that you like
Like I know you're really into fantasy
Like that's not necessarily like the thing that >> makes me want to pick up a book
Like I find a lot of >> fascination and like I don't know things that I can relate more to my own personal life like >> in that sense. >> Have you [clears throat] read Finding 13? >> No

The last two books that I read which were amazing if anybody who watches this has read have read them was Demon Copperhead
Have you heard of that? >> Literally it today and I was like >> fantastic
That book I think is pivotal for any person just like in any sort of line of life
Like I think there's a lesson for everybody but I think any young male should read that book
I think there's so many lessons that if I was a man I feel like I would be able to even have a greater experience with
And then um the martyr, I don't know if it's actually martyr or the martyr, but that was >> Martyr >> phenomenal
Like the way that that book is written and the plot twist at the end
I won't spoil anything, but like I had the greatest experience reading that book, but those were the two books that really got me back into a flow of reading. >> What's like your favorite like trope? Like do you love like a plot twist? Do you love like an unexpected character coming in? like a love triangle
Like what do you guys like? >> I love a plot twist
I think I find I gravitate >> Yeah
I love a plot twist at the end because I feel like it just makes you feel like it was all worth it in a sense. >> But I also I gravitate more to like how the book is written and this the sense of speech that the author writes in
Like I love to read things >> in the same frequency that I think
Like I in my mind it's like a constant stream of stream of um thoughts that don't really have like a specific ending
So I love runon sentences like I love somebody who has a sentence that lasts half the page like thank you cuz for me that allows me to >> create the image in my mind almost as if I was watching TV where like if somebody has shorter more >> dialogue in their writing I don't love it as much. like >> Colleen Hoover and who's the author who wrote um >> People You Meet on Vacation? >> Uh Emily Henry. >> Emily Henry

Has a lot of dialogue and for me that's kind of harder to get into because I can't imagine that speech as I could somebody's like >> inner thoughts. >> Yeah
Inner thoughts and framing. >> I read this one book Next to Heaven by James Frey and it was from like 12 different people's perspective and each paragraph was written from a different character's perspective
So, it would say like their name and then like a paragraph about them and then it went through and explained everyone's love dynamic and who was dating who
And basically, it's kind of crazy
They decided to have a swingers party and then at the swingers party somebody >> swingers party >> like when you're in a bunch of couples and you're all married and you come together and then you all switch around. >> Wa >> crazy
And it was all like about like 40-year-olds
It was like really >> Jojo's seeing her future
She's like, "Okay [laughter] >> she's into it." Um, but yeah, that was like a crazy reading experience and it honestly didn't feel like I was reading a book
It felt like I was watching a movie. >> Was it like a script almost? >> Like Yeah, but there was like zero dialogue. >> Interesting. >> Like very very very small amounts. >> And that was the first time that I'd ever done like a multi- characters perspective and that was really interesting

Wasn't that multi- character? >> Was it? But isn't that like different chapters? No, it goes from the perspective of Evelyn Hugo and then of the perspective to the other character. >> Yeah

Well, first of all, I also think that there should be some kind of like trigger warning because I feel like they did talk about there was >> in the beginning there was a trigger warning at the end of the episode of the episode that they talked about
There's a trigger warning cuz I watched that. >> I will say it was interesting cuz they were weaving in like deeper themes with their like lighthearted script. >> Yeah. >> Which was kind of interesting. >> Well, I thought about the same thing with the book

It felt like very lighthearted, like something like a high schooler would read, like the writing style, and it just went into like a crazy left field, like very traumatic thing that happens to someone. >> And like even while watching it and reading it, it just felt like >> like you're talking about, this script was very lighthearted, especially between Hannah and Garrett, like the two main characters
And then it would just be like she would get these crazy flashbacks or like these crazy nightmares and I'd be like, >> "Well, there's nothing else dark in it besides obviously we'll get later into it when Garrett and um the dad have >> that." But I just also felt like the chemistry read between Hannah and Garrett in this TV show did not read the way that it did in the book
Like in the book you were like really rooting for them and you were like, "Oh, well maybe." But like also in the film, like what was the the side character that Hannah wanted? John

It was like Justin in the book was like not really a main character and then in the film he was in like half the episodes and I was like wait what? But it's hard because they have to like adapt it in a way that people that haven't read the book are interested in it and like will because then also in the future they can do more spin-offs with it
So maybe that's what they're trying to do. >> I did think the conversation between >> what's the main girl's name? Hannah and her mom in the show. >> I don't know what it was in the book because I didn't read the book
But >> you mean the part where she's crying? where she's crying and she's crying to the mom and she's having like this distressing moment. >> I honestly felt like that was like so touching even though the rest of the show is not that evoking of emotion to me at least
And then in that moment I like >> we I mean we were watching it very relaxed like in the background
I mean I have no >> connection with the characters really at all
But in that I like took a second and we were I was like wow this is really emotional
And I think it's a really important way to >> how do I say this in like an appropriate manner to appeal that type of conversation of like acceptance to a younger generation in something that's not so intense >> all around in every episode in every moment you know because I think sometimes those conversations come up in very >> intense which makes you want to avoid >> films which makes you want to avoid them and also doesn't allow for that conversation to be >> yeah more relevant And in a younger I obviously that shouldn't be a conversation anybody should have to have but it is really important for people to have that motherly >> perspective of saying like to her I mean without spoiling what happens but >> really making her feel heard and seen and all this >> stuff
So I thought that that was honestly like >> kudos to that for that
It was kind of um it was kind of accurate at how like the how the girl was having the panic attacks, how Hannah was having the panic attacks
And I was like, "Okay, this is a nice perspective for people to watch and kind of understand what's going on in somebody's head when they're like having >> when they're having PTSD, you know what I mean? Like the the heart and then like thumping sounds and it was just really interesting
Also, just like the not being able to formulate for her like >> sentences, >> sentences and just like saying like the bike, it's the bike or whatever when she was having that moment
I thought that was really powerful also because sometimes you just don't know where the pain is coming from when that happens. >> It's like something so small that sets off like an entire different like >> thing
That's always been such a big thing for me
It's like I'm in the middle of just totally normal day and like one thing happens and then your day is completely ruined and you're freaking out about this like random thing but Like I think in a lot of ways with the film, they did hit the nose
Like for example, like that scene or even just like like this was not an accurate thing from the book adaptation, but the one episode where she was like, "Give me an orgasm so I can have my first orgasm." Like I felt like that also touched a lot of things that like maybe maybe none of us can really understand, but like I'm sure other people couldn't relate to
It's like you're almost nervous in a weird way. kind of made me was like a baby gay Olivia
But like when you know when you're like practicing with your friends to kiss them cuz you're like oh my gosh I'm going to kiss my first boy
But then like I look back at it and I practiced on way too many people, way too many girls. [laughter] >> You're just testing out the waters

Maybe I didn't need my first kiss as a boy

But I know that like my sister for example like loves to watch it again because to her it like brings her back to a time of watching it and having this association with it >> where it like feels >> and like every time I watch it I watch it like once a year. >> Yeah, me too. >> Every year >> it progressively gets cringier and like I noticed like there was an apple on the table there and then in the next shot the apple's gone. >> Yeah

And I feel like that's what got you into that book
Maybe every time I listen to it, like listen to those songs now, it reminds me of the book and like everything I felt with that book >> and just like our relationship and >> maybe we'll link it. >> Please do. >> No, it's kind of interesting. >> Is this the part where you kiss? >> Um, she's kind of far. [laughter] >> So, some of us here have some very deep roots to the LGBTQIA relationship
I mean, >> community. >> The community, right? So, do you have any advice or like what would you share to someone who is in like this process of potentially coming out? >> Experiment
And you don't have to put a label on it
It's okay
Not everyone needs a label
I think like if anything, other people want a label more than you for some reason. >> Um, you can >> just exper try your thing and if you don't like something, you don't like something
I would recommend trying something twice before you say you don't like it because I know that I've had a bad experience with a girl the first time and so has I think you've had experience too which made me think I was like actually asexual
I was like okay no for guys, no for girls and now what? >> And then I tried girls one more time and I was like okay this is for me and I think >> you don't have to force it
I think like a lot of us like think something and then you force it
You don't have to force it and you don't have to put yourself in a box
Yeah. >> And I think for some people it's more obvious than others that they're gay
Like for me, like I didn't really know until like quarantine and I was seeing all those Tik Toks
Right
Right. >> Gay Tik Tok 2020. >> What a time. >> I unfortunately wasn't on gay Tik Tok and I wish I did cuz I love to just come out sooner and just be myself sooner. >> But you had the signs growing up like she was wearing tell us what you were wearing and what you had on your wall
Like my my my room was like an Xbox, a basketball hoop, a couple penny [laughter] boards on the >> penny
In every color, um some soccer balls, some trophies, you know, >> whatever
You guys, you guys get >> like for her it was obvious
Like for me, like I didn't really know
And also like it's kind of hard when you're not dressing like a tomboy from the age of four, you know what I mean? >> But yeah, just don't press it
Also, side note, if you don't feel safe coming out in your situation, don't do it until you're moved out and you're safe. >> I don't think you have to come out if your family is homophobic or if you feel like the people around you aren't going to accept you
Um, tell a friend that you trust, but don't feel forced to come out if you don't think it's going to be a safe situation for you
Side note. >> Period. [laughter] >> Anyways, how was coming out for you? >> Yeah
How was it? >> Like so awkward. >> But why? Why was that awkward? >> Well, like look at me. >> What do you mean? >> Like, [laughter] >> oh my god. >> Like, do you feel like people didn't believe you or something? >> Like, no
And my friends were the friends like when I came out to them, they were like, well, do you think I'm hot? >> I was like, no. >> Oh my god
Like, ew
That's like it was so infuriating to me
Like I had this one girl specifically who I'm no longer friends with because of this
Like I had been dating somebody I've been dating a female for quite some time and she flew from somewhere to come and visit me because we had been friends prior and when she got there like I wasn't out to like >> everyone yet
Like I was out just to my very close friends and everyone knew I was dating this girl >> and she came and visited me and I was like oh yeah like by the way like you'll probably meet my girlfriend this week
Like she's going to probably sleep over tonight or something like that
And she started like asking these questions
She's like, "Well, do you think I'm hot like in a gay way?" And I was like, "No, if I thought you were hot in a gay way, you would not be that's your biggest fear when you're coming out is like your straight friend friends thinking you have a crush on them." >> Yeah
And I had so many so many of my straight friends like thought I had a crush on them and I was like >> like this isn't about you. >> Yeah
Like relax. >> So that was like a really weird experience
Like coming out to my mom was a really weird experience
I just kind of like called her on the phone and was just like I'm gay. day of dating this girl
Like gave her like 30 facts about the girl and then hung up. >> And then >> I never came out to my dad
I just sent him a shirt that said in my daughter's gay and like let him [laughter] put the two kind of iconic. >> Yeah
And then my sister my sister was supportive
Like my hometown friends weren't really supportive. >> Mhm
It's hard in Florida as well. >> I lost a lot of them. >> Yeah. >> But they just like like when I came out, they just like sent it in my group chat and was like, "What the is this?" And I was like >> that's like a rude worst thing that could happen
Like in a rude way
Yeah
So, I actually like didn't answer >> and I never really answered the group chat again. >> But anyways, the point is to just be gay, be happy, be whatever you want to be, >> and be safe. >> Yeah, be safe about it
